Decorating for Christmas is one of the best parts of the holiday season. Here are some simple tips that will help anyone from a novice designer working on their first yard to old pros who have been decorating for years. A common question is when you should start decorating. This varies greatly by culture and region, even in the United States. The basic rule, though, is that you can decorate anytime after Thanksgiving. We always do it the second week of December, and I used to have neighbors who would do all of their decorating on Christmas Eve. Putting up outside Christmas decorations can take hours, or even an entire weekend. The best way to cut down on that time is to start with a good plan. Here are some tips:

1. Stand in your yard and decide how you want it to look. Visualize the display and how it will look at night.

2. Pick a theme. This can be something specific like having all Santa decorations, or something more abstract, such as several displays centered around a tree.

3. Think of colors. All white lights make the display look more elegant, but can get boring for large displays. Large, solid blue, green and red lights give a retro feel and make people think of their own childhoods. Current trends are leaning more towards neon colored led lights, which give a fresh and exciting look.

4. Pick a focal point. This can be an inflatable Santa, a nativity scene, or several lighted reindeer standing around a lit tree. This will give the display more purpose, and will make it much more visually appealing.

5. Choose a wreath. You will want to hang something on your door. This makes the home look inviting, and gives a little decoration during the day when the lights are off.

6. Once you decide on the basics, measure the areas where you will put lights so that you know how much to buy. You do not want to have to go back to the store to pick up another set of lights, only to find that the color you need has sold out!

7. Decide how you will hang your lights. If hanging from the roof, climb up and look at the edge of the roof before going to the store. Stores will have several types of hooks, and you want to be sure they will fit your roof before going to buy them.

8. Check your power. Where are your outlets, and do you have enough power cords to reach the strings of lights and displays? You should also make sure you have a timer that will automatically turn the lights on and off. A good rule of thumb is to keep them on from dusk until midnight.

Once you have your plan together, then it’s just a matter of heading to the store, picking up your decorations, and setting them up. And do not forget, Christmas decorations are for Christmas, and should be taken down no later than one week after the New Year. By following the above tips, you should be able to create a great looking outside display that you will get to enjoy through the entire season.

Christmas is many people’s favorite time of year, and besides the festivities, decorations are high on the list. Both indoor and outdoor decorations are great, and many people love putting them up. I’m an enormous fan of outdoor decorations and here are some or my all time favorites.

Everyone loves Christmas lights, and they are better and there are many more options than even just a few years ago. Modern LED lights use far less energy as well. The colors and shapes are pretty incredible these days. My favorites include white and clear lights, as these are visible the furthest, as well as multi colored strings and red and green single colored strings. Of course they are available in more colors than you would ever guess. Commercial lights are not much more expensive and may be more economical in the long run as they last longer and the bulbs rarely burn out. Even battery powered lights are available for places not close to commercial power, like the end of my driveway.

Blow up decorations are very popular with the kids. To some extent they’ve replaces rigid plastic outside decorations, and they are bigger, light up, and very festive. We have a blow up Santa the kids love.

Nativity scenes are also popular, and both individual pieces and complete sets are available. Outdoor silhouettes and motifs, wreaths, and both real and artificial decorated trees are also very popular.

Even an apartment dweller can put up a small wreath outside their door.

The Nikka Name in History

It was 2008 and I was in a helicopter flying over the culturally rich city of Barcelona.

Seeing it from above was something else. You realize from 1000 feet up just how tight the city is with the sand coloured buildings clustered closely together in regimented blocks. I visited such sights as ‘La Sagrada Familia’, one of Antonio Gaudi’s great unfinished works, a Cathedral unlike any you’re ever likely to see anywhere else.

Those interested in architecture will marvel at the sheer detail of the building which sports strange growths on it’s spires adorned with what appear to be scoops of ice-cream. I don’t exaggerate when I say that it must be a building with the most external detail in the world. The outside walls are adorned with figures depicting the nativity, standing on plinths and nestled among, what appear to be, salad leaves of the frilly variety. It’s crazy.

And so begins the love affair that many people develop on visiting Barcelona, a city as multicultural as London but with gorgeous weather for most of the year and sandy beaches within easy reach.

When I left, I realized that the Spaniards really do have a flair for design. Just look at their leather wear. Not satisfied to produced run-of-mill leather goods, they bedeck theirs with tassels, studs and zips – stylish and functional. And this love of intricate and beautiful design is a tradition going back hundreds of years.

But one thing I didn’t expect to see while wandering the streets of this ‘carnival’ city was a gallery devoted to the work of a bathroom ware manufacturer.

The Roca gallery houses some of the worlds most contemporary bathroom ware, so beautiful as to warrant their own professionally lit displays inside this great glass edifice. Toilets in most other countries are regarded with humor and the butt of many jokes – pun intended. But to the people at Roca, a toilet can be a work of art. And theirs are.

The gallery houses such oddities as the ‘Urbi 2′ counter top wash basin which has a swooping profile that wouldn’t look out of place in a sc-fi movie. But this love of the avant-garde doesn’t mean that they’ve lost touch with more regular pieces such as the Roca Laura 4 Piece Bathroom Set which would suit most bathrooms and is priced for most pockets.

If you’re ever in Barcelona, the Roca Gallery is definitely worth a visit and if you fancy a slice of Spanish design perhaps the Roca Laura or Roca Laura Low Level bathroom set would fit the bill.

What is mental strength? There are many “definitions” of mental strength, depending who you ask. I would like to offer this definition: “Mental strength is having the courage to follow your compass.

Live life in abundance…we’ve heard this mantra from authors such as “Seth”, “Abraham-Hicks” and movies like “The Secret” and the “Quest for Success.” We all want to experience life at the highest levels. And over the years, we have been taught the importance of vision and clear thought, but how?Those who have truly attained success in all aspects of life know there is more that needs to be done to reach the top, and live a life of fulfillment and gratitude. Part of that is developing the mental strength to be seeker and adventurer of life and your passions.

Anybody can sit home, watch TV and complain about their life. But it takes courage, mental strength and a warriors mind to go out a look for your TRUE life. And without knowing your optimal path, life tends to meander like a stream. A stream will take you down the mountain, but it will never carry you to the top. But a good set of guides can help you climb up the mountain.

These guides can come from many sources, i.e. a mentor, a couch, but the most important guide is yourself, your personal compass.

I’m sure you saying, this all sounds good but how? So, here are three extremely powerful questions to ask the explorer and adventurer in you.

1. “Are you prepared to make a change?” – By committing to making a change you are telling yourself that you’re ready for an adventure. Now one thing about change, many people will tell you that change is tough, change is NOT tough, it’s the resistance to change that is tough. Once you accept that you are ready to make change all the rest is easy…relatively speaking

2. “Once the choice is made, are you courageous enough to start?” – It’s one thing say “Yes, I’m ready to change!” It’s another to put that enthusiasm into action. Nothing, I repeat nothing happens without action. As a wise teacher once said, “Faith without works is dead.” Sure you may want a change and have the courage and faith to make this change, but now is where the rubber hits the road. It’s time to “put up or shut-up”

3. “Will you commit to finishing what you start?” - OK, you’ve made the decision to create a change, you have the courage to start, but will you finish. Out of these three questions this one is probably going to create to most opportunity for observation and reflection. Are you committed to finishing what you start? If you’ve not committed, make it easy on yourself and just don’t start. I know, you’re probably thinking, “it’s better to have tried and failed then to never have tired at all.” Yes, it is important to take action and “fail”, but did you learn from the failure? Will keep going just because you failed at one thing? If you learn from failing, then it is not failing. If you keep going and try a different way, then it is not failing. If however, you stop, give-up and crawl back to you the old life you had….yes you failed!

But, maybe sometime in the future you’ll regain your courage, your mental strength and your warrior mind and go after it one more time.

These three questions are intended to stir up something in you, to stir up that longing that’s been buried and to find your own compass. Once you have found your compass and have the mental strength…the warrior mindset, you’ll then be equipped to go on your journey. My wish for you is that you make it an exciting adventure.

Body weight exercises come extremely handy at creating functional strength. But before moving any further, remember that you need to startup with these exercise, not before doing a light warm up for a few minutes. You can do a warm up by walking, marching while standing at one place or stepping side to side. The idea behind warming up your body before going for body weight exercises for strength is to get your blood circulating and you body temperature rising.

Here are the four basic body weight exercises, which hold the promise of increasing your strength significantly.

Handstand Push Up

This is another wonderful strength exercise. Kick your feet up against a wall, with your back touching the wall and lower yourself until your head touches the floor. Then, raise yourself back to the starting position. If this is too hard to start, you can always do the tent version with your feet on the floor or a chair.

One Arm Push – Up

This again requires a great amount of strength. When doing this, make sure to widen the base of your legs, or you may tip over. The goal here is not to simply be able to do one or two. The goal is to perform this exercise for multiple sets of 10 – 15 reps each. And if you find yourself doing this, you will see your strength increasing by the day.

One Leg Squat

It is a pure strength exercise, which not many are able to do due to the strength required. Many of you may not be able to do this initially so you will have to find something to assist you in this. You can try standing beside a pole or a chair, which you can grab onto to give yourself the boost to get out of the exercise. The best would be to use a rope tied to the ceiling of your garage or secured in a door, which you can hold on to.

Pull – Ups

Pull ups form a fantastic part of body weight exercises for strength. If you are looking for that big and strong back, you simply need to do pull ups. And once you reach a point where you can do 20 – 25 pull-ups in one set without any problem, then buy yourself a cheap backpack and load it with 20 – 25 pounds of weight, strap it on and get back to your pull-ups routine. When doing pull-ups, just aim for your goal and don’t stop till you reach it, no matter how many sets it takes you to achieve it.

As you progress, it would be advisable that you build some parallettes, which allow you a greater range of mobility. You can even build them out yourself and that too at quite a little cost.

So, with these four basic body weight exercises for strength, you can literally find your strength increasing, even to unimagined levels. So, get going!

Having read Evidence Dismissed, I picked up the paperback copy of this book to get a different perspective on the procedures that were followed ( or not) during the investigation of the murders of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson. I was pleasently suprised by the candor and the honesty of the author, as he told “his side of the story”. I, like others, felt that this man was the evil incarnate, but after reading this book I think that evil resides in the ego’s of all that were involved in this case. Furhman admits and even chastises himself for some of his faults, but points out supporting information that the media, the procescuters, and the defense team failed to provide, that indeeds shows that this man, like all of us, is not perfect yet is not the beast that he was made out to be. As the old saying goes, Just the facts ma’am, and in this case the facts still add up to a damning case against OJ Simpson. The facts are clearly laid out, the mistakes noted, and still in the end, you come up with the same conclusion, if not OJ, then who? I am glad I added this material to my knowledge of the case, it provides additional insight into the crime. Would I like to share a drink with Mark Furhman, before this book no, after, I would say yes.

Do you remember your first few vacations to the beach as a child with your parents when you had your little shovel and bucket and could let your imagination run wild as you built sand castles with moats around them?

Obviously, we were not the first to mold sand. Sand sculpting as an art form has been around for thousands of years; it is conjectured that the ancient Egyptians made sand models of the pyramids.

During the past century, the art of sand sculpting has been elevated to a profession. There are now companies that construct sculptures for special events and a school for teaching the skills of sand sculpting; the World Sand Sculpting Academy (WSSA). There are also numerous clubs and associations specializing in sand sculpting that hold regional, national, and even international competitions.

In order to make an intricate sand sculpture you need a shovel, bucket, masonry trowels, spatulas, apple corers, chisels, flat sticks, spoons, knives, brushes, melon ballers, forks, and spray bottles with water and stabilizer coatings. More importantly, you need creativity, talent, time, and last but not least, sand!

With 35 miles of sandy beaches around the periphery of Banderas Bay in the Puerto Vallarta, Mexico area, finding sand for the construction of sand sculptures is not a problem. With seven months of virtually rain free days (November through May) when the average daily temperature is 73°F, conditions in PV are perfect for practicing this art. Surrounded by the beautiful Sierra Madres with their colorful flora and fauna, the environment in Vallarta seems to stimulate the flow of creative juices and consequently, artists of all types abound.

The sand sculptors, located on the main beach downtown between the Malecon and the waters edge, are probably the most visible of all artists during the seven month “high season”. You’ll see them out on the beach with their shovels, tools, and sculpting forms. Oh yes, one of the more important tools of their trade is their small bucket that is used to collect the propinas or tips! They provide the community with such beautiful forms of art, so thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by the locals as well as the visitors, that all tips they receive are very much deserved.

It’s quite an amazing sight watching them digging, moving, piling, patting, tamping, and spraying the sand as the sculpture takes its shape, sometimes appearing to almost come to life. Their subjects include nativity and religious scenes, ancient Greek and Roman figures, local wildlife such as whimsical iguanas or just about anything else that might come to their minds. Upon completion of each sculpture, they are sprayed with a stabilizer coating and allowed to remain on the beach for some period of time before being demolished. This process of sculpting and demolishing continues throughout the entire “high season” resulting in a slightly different scene on the beach every day.

As is the case with many beautiful resort destinations, Puerto Vallarta has attracted a large artist colony. Artists displaying and selling oil paintings, watercolors, charcoals, and even spray paintings are all along the Malecon in front of the main beach downtown. Also, you’ll find numerous bronze sculptures by famous artists located along the Malecon with the beautiful sand sculptures directly behind them on the beach.

It is common knowledge that Puerto Vallarta offers great weather, great scenery, great eating, drinking, and lots of fun, but few know about all of the incredible art galleries, art shows, art classes, art walks, etc., until they arrive. Even fewer, unless they’ve been here during the past couple of years, are familiar with the new sculptures, the renovated Malecon extending over the Rio Cuale into the Romantic Zone, the widening of the sidewalks with planters, and the elimination of downtown street parking, all of which have contributed to the new face of downtown Vallarta.

It’s time to disregard the negative press and hype that you’re bombarded with by the media regarding drug wars and swine flu in Mexico; they’re virtually nonexistent in PV. Come on down and enjoy this beautiful, clean, safe, and renovated resort destination. The bronze and sand sculptures are only a couple of the many memorable highlights of Vallarta providing photo-ops for thousands of visitors daily. Now is the time to start planning your next visit to Paradise; just remember to bring your camera because you’ll surely want to preserve the memories of the magnificent sand sculptures of Puerto Vallarta.
